The Elan Awards is a unique event now in its sixth season. There has never before been an awards ceremony like the Oscars, the Tony's or the Grammy's for the most beautiful and ephemeral of all art forms–dance. On Monday October 10th acclaimed stage, television, and now movie director/choreographer Susan Stroman was presented with the Elan Awards. The audience rose to their feet as the famed director Harold Prince asked her to join him on stage and accept this award fashioned by Baccarat, New York This yearly choreography showcase was presented at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City and the evening features performances of new works from twelve choreographers across the spectrum of dance disciplines and from varied backgrounds and artistic viewpoints from around the country. Most exciting were the surprises for Ms. Stroman. The entire Broadway cast of Contact performed a special amazingly danced piece from two sections of the show and Tom Gold joined us from The New York City Ballet to dance a solo choreographed on him in Susan Stroman's Double Feature. |
Elan Awards History
The creative team behind the Elan Awards consists of Geoffrey Doig-Marx (COCreator/Producer), Bruce Robert Harris (CO-Executive Producer) and our copartner Dance Spirit Magazine
The team feels a deep sense of responsibility to acknowledge the previous generations of choreographers who have paved dance history by inspiring, educating and changing the way students and audiences perceive dance.
By presenting the award (an honoree) as part of a dance awards show, the team is bridging the gap between generations and paying homage in the best way they can: dance itself, depicting how each choreographer has used their knowledge to reinterpret it.
Each year up and coming grass roots choreographers submit their tapes in hopes of being chosen to present their work. Our board sees these tapes and votes on the choreographers for the awards show.
The actual show is a multimedia presentation of choreographer interviews, live performances, guest interviews and film footage.
Past honors went to Lar Lubovitch, Rob Marshall, Ann Reinking, Jerry Mitchell and Graciella Danielle
From the Celtic tradition, the word "elan" translates as "flight."
